Gilded under a domed roof, the white and gold facade of Grand Hotel Kronenhof rises above Pontresina in the Upper Engadin valley, at the foot of the Bernina massif. A guesthouse has stood on this site since 1848. The present Belle Époque hotel, whose name means "Crown Court," was completed in 1896, and its silhouette still marks the valley from a distance.
Inside, the light shifts. Stained-glass windows color the halls, and a frescoed hall opens beneath painted ceilings that have watched over guests for more than a century. You notice the quiet first, then the detail: gilt edges, tall windows, the hush of a room built to be looked at as much as lived in.
Outside, the Bernina massif holds the horizon, with the Morteratsch glacier and the Diavolezza cableway within easy reach, and the hotel's south-facing terraces catch the afternoon sun long into the day.
