Founded in 1856 by the Badrutt family, the hotel was the first grand hotel built in St. Moritz and one of the earliest resort hotels in the Alps. The family has held it since, through five generations of ownership. In the 1860s they invited the first winter guests to the valley, a decision now credited with starting Alpine winter tourism.
The hotel stands on the sun terrace above St. Moritz, at 1,800 meters in the Upper Engadin valley, with Lake St. Moritz directly below and the Bernina range rising across the water. The lake mirrors the peaks. From the terrace, you can see the full line of summits along the far shore.
Winter turns the lake into the village ice rink. Skaters, snow polo matches, and races cross the ice through the season, while the hotel's own terrace pool stays heated for swimming in any weather. Summer shifts the view to grass: guests reach the hotel's nine-hole golf course, laid out above the lake, in a short walk from the terrace.
The hotel has 125 rooms and suites. It remains, as it began in 1856, a property built into the slope above St. Moritz, with the lake beneath it and the mountains rising across the water.
