Bo-Kaap's steep cobblestone streets and brightly painted houses date to the early 19th century, when formerly enslaved Cape Malay families settled the district. A walking tour through the area remains the most direct way to reach Cape Malay cooking, with stops for bobotie, sosatie, koeksisters or a Cape Malay curry along the route. Guides typically weave the food into the wider history of the community that has lived there since. It sits a short drive from the hotel, a different register of the city entirely from the harbour and its glass-fronted towers.
