La Residence

Set on a private 30-acre estate in the Franschhoek Valley, La Residence sits among vines, fruit trees and gardens with the Drakenstein mountains behind. The estate holds three kinds of stay: eleven hotel suites, five Vineyard Suites and Franschhoek House, a six-bedroom villa for exclusive use. Rooms differ by scale, not by standard. Luxury and Superior Suites in the main house carry antique furniture, rich fabrics and valley or mountain views, each with air conditioning, a mini bar and a bath and shower. The Vineyard Suites are built for families, with one to three bedrooms, private gardens, plunge or rim-flow pools, and an open kitchen where guests can watch the chef work. Meals draw on produce grown on the estate itself. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the Great Hall or the Loggia, overlooking the pond, and menus are built around what the chef and guest discuss together. Wine comes from a list of local estates, selected rather than exhaustive. Beyond the grounds, Franschhoek's restaurants, boutiques and galleries lie five minutes away by complimentary transfer. Wine tasting, golf, cycling, hiking and fly-fishing on the Wemmers River are all within reach, along with helicopter routes over the wider Winelands. The spa offers a signature Pinotage treatment, made with grape products grown nearby. There is also a pool, gym and library on site. Service stays personal throughout: staff learn names and preferences early, and meals are shaped accordingly. The estate remains a working farm as much as a hotel.
